Chlora's Watering Can

glazed porcelain with gold
9" x 6" x 15"
Adaptation from 6th c. Byzantine mosaic, The Baptism of Christ, from the Arian Baptistery, Ravenna.

Chlora got a pack of stickers
at Vacation Bible School with
all the plants of the Bible.
She stuck them on her watering can
and they turned the water holy
so when she sprinkled her dandelion patch
a miracle occurred and it covered
the entire front yard!
Such success had its drawbacks though.
Sprinkling is hard work as any good Methodist knows.
Now she understood why those Baptists got dunked like a donut.

When she grew up she'd become a fireman with a big hose
and be like a well-watered garden.
She would plant millions of mustard seeds
and grow her own faith as well as French’s yellow mustard.
She’d purify the world with hyssop,
raise enormous figs with extra large leaves
that naked people could hide behind.
And then she'd invite them all back into Eden
to play in the sprinklers where rainbows grew
and they'd toss seeds only in the fertile ground,
pick all the illegal wild flowers they could find,
eat grapes right off the vine, and cultivate awe.
