Dustpan Covenant

glazed porcelain
1 ¼" x 9" x 12 ¼"

This sculpture prompted an early technical experiment to see if a glossy glazed piece fired onto an underglazed piece would permanently adhere. It did, and that provided the spiritual meaning of the dustpan.
The broken shards evoke two symbols of covenant—they are from a goblet that has a rainbow design around the rim. The brokenness is indelibly fixed to the dustpan, as if gathered and swept up. But not discarded.
When we break our end of the deal, what does God do with the pieces?

"I have become like a broken vessel." (Psalm 31:12)

"He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." (RSV, Colossians 1:17)
